Craig Williams named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young

Posted November 14, 2013

St. John’s businessman Craig Williams, president and CEO of Future Group Company, has won an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® Award in the category of “Real Estate/Construction” for the Atlantic Canadian region!

Announced at a gala in Halifax, NS, Williams’ win was one of two for the province out of a total of seven categories for the region.

“It is nice to be recognized among such a distinguished group of business people in Atlantic Canada by such a prestigious firm as Ernst & Young,” said Williams. “It is nice to bring the hardware home for all Newfoundland and Labrador business people who, in my opinion, can match up against any in the world.”

Ernst & Young have been selecting recipients for these awards for two decades by looking at a variety of criteria from financial performance to personal integrity and community engagement.

Williams began his career in real estate by selling new home construction. After developing strong relationships with local builders and developers he set to work creating a network of his own businesses to include: land development, excavation and engineering, renovation, and both residential and commercial construction. Today, Future Group boasts 15 companies and approximately 100 employees with over 60 million dollars in annual sales.

Some familiar company names within Future Group include: Skymark Homes (the largest residential builder in the province), The Home Team real estate team, Baraco Atlantic (a commercial general contracting company), and Contour Atlantic and Greenmark Construction (both specializing in heavy civil construction).

Williams is also a very active member of his community. He has served as president for the province’s Canadian Home Builder’s Association in 2012, in addition to six years as a member of the board. The CHBA-NL awarded him ‘Builder Member of the Year’ in 2011.

Part of Williams’ mission has been to create an environment in which all employees feel part of and included within the group of companies, and where everyone knows their thoughts and ideas are valued.

“I was told one time by an employee years ago that I did not hire people, I adopted them,” said Williams, “and that is something I will always carry with me and feel proud of. We run a ‘WE’ show, not an ‘I’ show.”

Williams said the part he loves about business most is the people he works with day in and day out. “Being a small part in contributing to their lives and the well-being of their families, is the most rewarding part of business.”
